The research

What the published literature examined.

Epitalon is a tetrapeptide bioregulator with one of the longest preclinical research histories of any compound in longevity science. It was developed from four decades of work by Professor Vladimir Khavinson at the Saint Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology.

About the Compound

Epitalon (also spelled Epithalon) is the synthetic form of Epithalamin, a peptide originally extracted from the pineal gland. Its amino acid sequence is Alanine-Glutamic acid-Aspartic acid-Glycine (AEDG). Development began in the 1980s as part of a broader program of bioregulator peptide research that has since published findings in Western peer-reviewed journals.

The most cited area of Epitalon research is telomere biology. Studies in human cell cultures and animal models have examined its proposed role in activating telomerase, the enzyme responsible for maintaining telomere length. Telomere shortening is a recognized marker of cellular aging, and compounds that influence telomerase activity are an active area of longevity research.

Research Areas

  • Telomerase activation. In vitro studies on human somatic cells have demonstrated telomerase activation and telomere elongation, published in peer-reviewed journals including Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine.
  • Melatonin regulation. Studies in aging animal models have examined a proposed role in restoring pineal melatonin production, which declines with age.
  • Longevity markers in animal models. Rodent studies from Khavinson’s group have documented increased lifespan in treated groups compared to controls.
  • Immune modulation. Studies have examined effects on immune cell populations in aging models, including interleukin-2 and T-cell activity.

The majority of published research comes from Khavinson’s group and has not been widely independently replicated in Western laboratories. Human clinical data is limited. The preclinical research base is substantial; the independent verification is not.
